NORTH SIKKIM & MANGAN
All the biggest and most well known peaks including
Kanchanjunga , Siniolchu and Knagchengyau are located in North
Sikkim. Lachen, Lachung, Yumthang Valley and Gurudongmar Lake
have become most popular tourist destinations in the last few
years but newer areas are opening up every year with the growing
road network. Mangan provides an ideal base for tourists who
want to go on package tour or those who want their tour custom
made to suit their interest. It makes sense to spend the most
time in the best tourist spot.
PLACES OF INTEREST AROUND MANGAN
1. The Ringhim Monastery: It is a twenty minutes drive from
the main town.The 150 years old monastery has good views of
Mount Kangchenjunga, a presiding deity and is famous for its
colorful festivals and religious dances.
2. The Ringhim Viewpoint: It has a magnificent view of the
meandering Teesta River and the surrounding countryside. It is
also the site of the Ringhim helipad.
3. Mangan Bazar: Mangan Bazar established in 1903, during
Younghusband’s tour of North Sikkim, the old bazaar is of
historic value.
4. The Pakshep Viewpoint: This viewpoint located around three
kilometers north of the town on the National Highway. The
Pakshep viewpoint provides the best views of the Eastern face of
the Kangchenjunga range, especially at sunrise. Satyajit Ray and
Hooker are some of the travelers who have tried to capture this
view in different mediums.
5. Namprikdang: It is located about twenty minutes drive from
Mangan is the Lepcha Reservation of Dzongu. Near its entrance,
has a forest Bungalow, a fishing spot and a small Lepcha Museum.
These are located on a river terrace at the confluence of the
Teesta and the Tholung river.
6. The Rangrang Bridge: This bridge is situated 8 Km South of
Mangan, on the Gangtok Mangan Highway, is the highest bridge in
India. The height of the bridge above the surface of the stream
is about 90 meters ( a twenty seven story skyscraper would fit
under this bridge). The old suspension bridge has been abandoned
for a newer concrete cantilever bridge.
7. Lingza Waterfall: Lingza Waterfall and home stays in a Dzongu
village to sample local Lepcha cultures are popular with
tourists.
